Summer Blues

Maria Bernard Writer

So, hey… I’ve been working a new book for a while. Actually, I started it in January but it got put on the back-burner due to other projects. Then, of course, summer hit and with it, a heaping load of apathy and self-doubt.

It’s nothing to worry about. It’s a pattern I’ve come to recognize with myself in regards to the book publishing aspect of writing. You see, as I write, I am inspired and excited to present my story to the world. But the actual reality of publishing can be quite soul-destroying. The moment a book is uploaded, a feeling of helplessness comes into play.

Why? Because, I suppose, it comes down to lack of validation from readers. It’s sad, true. It’s weak, yes. But it’s the truth. I write for the joy of it, but I publish for the readers. When I hear nothing from readers, the process seems pointless.

See, I can write stories for the joy of it, stories that I would want to read, create characters that I love, and simply keep them all to myself and be quite content. It’s what I did before I decided to take the plunge into self-publishing. I can easily go back to doing that. It’s what might just happen.

What can I tell you? I’m a victim of vanity just like everyone else. But is it vanity or wanting validation? If wanting validation for your work is wrong, then I apologize and ignore me.

But… if you’ve read my books and have taken that extra step to reach out to me, I thank you, and hold your kind words close to my heart. If you’ve taken the time to write a review, then bless you, you are my beloved few.

If you’ve read, enjoyed, yet never said a word, I forgive you. My readers are generally shy and introverted. It’s what I believe to be true, because to those are who my words speak the loudest.

~Maria Bernard~

The Subject of Fear

Not long ago, I created some teasers from my books around the word fear and as a result, I realized how often it actually comes up in my writing. Should it worry me? Stress me out? No, I find it fascinating.
Fear – it can save your life or it can also paralyze you. Fear is a basic instinct in all of us. To claim you are fearless is to fool yourself into thinking you are braver than you are. When, in truth, bravery is not about living without fear, but to face those fears and handle them the best you can. To voice a concern about fear is not weakness or shameful. It’s simply a way of dealing with it, or taking that first step to confront it. Courage is a key ingredient to facing your fears. Again, it takes courage to give voice to your fears. To open yourself to others takes a lot of courage, especially if you are already fearful.
The real culprit or enemy of the soul and body is stress. Stress is feeling like you are stuck and thinking or believing you need to be somewhere else. Like being stuck in traffic. There’s nothing you can do about it, but you’re angry and frustrated because you need to get somewhere else or you’ll be late. Or it’s about being where you are in your career, finances, education, etc., but thinking or believing you should be further ahead. That is insanity. That is stress.

When you face your fears, you demolish stress. But you can’t face your fears until the time comes, or an opportunity presents itself. There’s no point in confronting your fears ahead of time since the situation that scares you most may never even come to pass. Sometimes the best course of action is inaction. Be still. It’s harder than you think.

Today’s Story is…
Interview With An Angel by Maria Bernard

“Ready? Wonderful, let’s do this. But on my terms.”
“Terms? But this is my project! Stop being such a bully!”
“My way, or the highway, sunshine. Deal with it.”
“Fine then, go on! You know what I was going to ask already. You always know everything.”

I can’t fight the smile that tugs on my lips at the return of her ire. My charge, my assigned one… she’s a firecracker and I love that about her. Her age at thirteen human years cracks me up. This is my first teenager and I’m thrilled and honoured to be in the presence of one such as this. Tara wasn’t always this way. When I first set eyes on her, she was no larger than my palm. I hadn’t expected to feel anything close to that of which hit me when she stared up at me with those eyes of blue. Then again, I am relatively new at this. In Angel years, I’m not that much older than she is.

When she turned two, she fascinated me to no end. Human children are funny little creatures, I must say. Take Tara, for example. At two, her head being so disproportionally bigger than the rest of her body, she teetered about the world, always on the verge of falling over. I recall being dumbfounded and overwhelmed, thinking how on earth would I ever keep her upright.

I didn’t expect to enjoy the company of a girl child until Tara was placed under my watch. Now, I couldn’t fathom dealing with anyone else.

“Well? Start!”

I nod and take a seat in the chair facing her. She has her pen poised, sitting at her desk. I’ve agreed to help with her school project. An interview. She could have interviewed anyone, but she chose me. Since I’ve already broken the golden rule, I saw no way out of this one. Being me, I couldn’t resist the challenge.

“I can’t simply start… You start… Ask me your questions.” I point my long finger at her and she furrows her brow, rolls her eyes then turns to her papers.

“Okay fine, this is silly though, you already know what I’m going to ask!”

“The assignment,” I remind her. “Is to interview. Therefore, you must ask the questions.”

She gives me that withering stare I’ve come to know and love. After an overdramatic eye roll, she begins.

“Fine… What is your name and what do you do?”

“Wonderful,” I say as I lean forward and rest my chin in my hands, my elbows on my knees, my blue-black hair hanging forward, shrouding my peripheral. My vision is solely on my interviewer, yet my eyes lose focus as I prepare to answer.

“My name is Victor and I am an Angel, of the Guardian variety…”

Today’s Story is…
Crooked Halos by Maria Bernard

“So, where are these so-called friends of yours?” asked Victor, watching me with a quirk of a dark brow, his crooked halo floating above his head. Sitting in his chair, he might as well be on a throne with that arrogance he wore so well.

“They should be here soon!” I said with as much conviction as I could muster. At the skepticism staring back at me, my resolve crumbled. He knew without me saying so, that my ‘friends’ weren’t coming, that I was alone, by myself, in my made-up world where I was a star. Foolish me.

When he tilted his face, and held out his hand, I didn’t hesitate.

“It’s all right,” he whispered in my ear. “I’ll always show up for you.” He held me and I sighed in the comfort of his beloved embrace.

“You’ve never let me down, Victor. I only wish I could do this on my own. I wanted to prove that I’m strong, that I have strength in numbers, friends who would support me.”

“You have that in me, Tara,” said my guardian as I buried my nose in the comforting abyss of his dark hair.

“Thank God for you.”

Get Rocked box Set

Get Rocked Vegas Summer Music Festival is about to get started! We have 12 stories and they are all fantastic books. I have found some new authors and enjoyed catching up with some of my “old” authors that I’ve read before. If you are looking for something new to read, I know you can find something you will like in this boxed set. If you can’t, then you are missing some good rock bands. I voluntarily chose to review a copy of this book for review that I received from the publisher.

Beating Hearts by Jade C. Jamison

Brandon is a drummer getting ready to play at his first festival. He’s very young and due to the way that he was raised, he’s very immature in life. He feels like a boy and he’s ready to be a man. If only his band mates would stop trying to shelter him. This was a good book showing how a boy took control and became a man out on the road.

Something Wicked by Theresa Hissong

We meet Kit Ellis, bassist for the heavy metal band, Something Wicked, and Aiden Hawkes, vocalist for the band as they travel to Las Vegas. They are going to be an opening act at the Get Rocked Festival along with the other 2 members of the band. The chemistry between these two is out of this world! This is just one more great book from Theresa Hissong! The band is great together and you just want to rock along with them. Great book! Now I hope we get books on the rest of the band, too.

Guitar God by Lindy S. Hudis

Diego’s a rock guitar legend and a member of Medieval Steel. He’s got a serious girl friend and a very serious stalker. Wow! This may be a short book but it’s fantastic! It has a flowing storyline that keeps you on the edge of your seat! I can’t wait to read more of her books.

Stand Up and Shout by Maria Bernard

Jay is the lead singer for the rock band, Southern Jackass. (You have to love that name.) He has a perfect pitch voice and could be the best singer in the field. But……. Jay has one small problem. He gets stage fright and can’t sing when he gets in front of a crowd. They also need a guitarist. In steps Alice. She’s amazing in more than one way. These 2 have major chemistry and are awesome together. What a great book this was!

All the books in this boxed set are just as good as these 4. You will love them.

A steamy collection of rockstar stories!!
By K Fischer on May 16, 2017

This is a steamy collection of rockstar stories that has something for everyone. Some of the stories included are a rocking duet with two bands, a couple of stalkers who were determined to get up close and personal with their favorite rockstars, and a couple of up and coming bands who won a contest to perform as the opening acts. There were a couple of Vegas rockstar weddings, including a fake one that was a prank and a bachelor party that got raided. The most unique storyline was about a young lead singer who couldn’t sing on stage because of extreme stage fright. My favorite was about a rockstar and an opera singer who had a tumultuous history and a surprising twist in their story. These stories had an eclectic mix of rockstars and love interests. I enjoyed this boxed set and found some interesting new-to-me authors.
